Abstract

This paper presents a statistical analysis of reported accidents related to fires in refineries around the world that have caused major explosions, loss of life and material damage. The 32 most significant incidents that occured between 2001 and 2017 are shown. These cases were analyzed to understand the common causes that led to the catastophic events and how certain external factors such as fire time, refinery development and complexity, daily oil production, season, location, causes and jurisdiction over the refinery affect the amount of damage due to fire. Based on the results obtained in this study, it can be concluded that there is association between daily oil production and the amount of damage caused by fire or explosion in refinery.
