This paper describes the notion of a smart city and formats that can be used for the exchange, visualization and management of the 3d city models. The experimental part refers to the formation of a 3d city model and its storage in the CityGML file format. The block of the city of Novi Sad, which covers the Petrovaradin fortress is modeled. Data processing was done primarily with Microstation V8i and FME.
