This paper analyzes problems and consequences of application layer based DDoS attacks on gaming servers. The hypothesis is that some of these attacks are caused by exploitation of the client application. A simulation was performed in a laboratory in order to prove these assumptions. The obtained logs from the server are plotted. There are several conclusions based on the data gathered through the simulation process and there’s a suggested solution relying on machine-learning based network firewalls.
