Abstract

The research analyzes the influence the consumer culture had on the developmet of urban units from the conception of the consumerism and consumer culture until today. It examins the phenomenons which emerge in the contemporary city: transition, money interest, gentrification and tourism. Mutual conditioning of phenomena forming public spaces, creating inequalities and displacing city districts, has been described. The analysis gave an insight into the specific causes and consequences of action in space. As a potential solution to this issue, this paper presents a design approach that will reap the benefits of consumerism as a 21st century legacy.
