The paper presents an overview of the most common types of structures of synchronous machines with permanent magnets (PMSM). On the example of a synchronous motor with interior permanent magnets, using the finite element method (FEA), the characteristic variables of the no-load operation such as the waveforms of induced electromotive forces and the cogging torque were calculated. The influence that the width of the stator slot opening has on the considered variables has been analyzed and discussed.
