In this paper, the state of the IT sector of the state administration of the Republic of Serbia is analyzed and strategic goals have already been defined. The paper describes the organizational structure of the state administration of the Republic of Serbia, and then the possibilities of application of information technologies in government organizations as well as the role of management in the development of information society in public administration. Information technologies have the most important impact on the processes within organizations by changing and adapting them to the needs of the real system. The key problem is reflected in the example of a public sector organization whose traditional procedures do not correspond to the real needs of citizens. Information systems are precisely necessary and important for the public sector because the application of information systems eliminates hierarchical levels and additional paperwork, while creating centers of responsibility.
