This paper is about ultrasound, more precisely its basic concepts and its usage. Ultrasound represents frequency waves over 20,000Hz and it is inaudible to the human ear. Ultrasonic waves are mechanical, longitudinal waves that can propagate in all material environments except vacuum. Ultrasound is obtained by converting electrical oscillations into mechanical oscillations. This process is made possible by the piezoelectric and magnetostrictive properties of matter. Ultrasound can propagate as a longitudinal wave, as a transverse wave, as a surface wave, and as a plate wave. Transmission and reception of ultrasound in the tested materials is being implemented with the help of ultrasonic probes. The usage of ultrasound is extremely wide. It is used in medicine, measurement, maritime, energy, etc.
