Abstract

The subject of this paper is researching the concept of utility value of housing, applied to apartments up to 50m2, i.e. ‘smaller apartments’, and the manner of applying this concept to their improvement. An important segment of the paper highlights the principles of utility value formulated by the architect Mate Bajlon in the 1950s and the principles of the Belgrade School Of Habitation, which further developed these criteria in practice. The paper covers topics significant for the quality of housing construction and spatial solutions for apartments, using examples from the socialist architecture of the former Yugoslavia, along with an analysis of examples of spatial solutions for smaller contemporary apartments worldwide. This approach to the paper enables an analysis of the selected topic from the perspective of the issues of architectural design, focusing on the theme of interior design, thereby framing the paper thematically.
