Abstract

Cohousing is a concept designed to facilitate life both socially and economically, bringing together individuals with shared goals and activities. It started in Denmark, with the first attempt to create a Danish housing community occurring in the winter of 1964 when Danish architect Jan Gudmand-Høyer gathered a group of friends to discuss current housing options.Cohousing offers many advantages, both financial and emotional, as well as opportunities for residents to be involved in the creation, development, and maintenance of their community. It relies on residents living and working together for the benefit of the community, which may be too much togetherness for some. Highly independent individuals and serious introverts may find it more comfortable to live elsewhere.Cohousing can address a range of issues faced by modern societies, including alienation, social isolation, and sustainability in living.
