Visions of the Future: An Analysis of Dystopian and Futuristic Architecture in Film and Its Influence on Contemporary Architecture

Abstract

This paper explores the relationship between film and architecture through dystopian and futuristic visions, demonstrating how cinema shapes architectural imagination and how architecture, in turn, influences cinematic spaces. Through an analysis of several films, architecture is examined as a carrier of ideas related to surveillance, inequality, ecological crisis, and loss of identity, but also as a symbol of resistance, hope, and community. In parallel, the works of architects such as Zaha Hadid, Rem Koolhaas, Santiago Calatrava, and Frank Gehry show how cinematic imagination is translated into real-world design, resulting in dynamic, participatory, and human-centered spaces. The conclusion emphasizes that architecture and film share the responsibility to transform crisis and fear into an impetus for empathy and renewal. The cinematic city becomes both a warning and a blueprint for resilient, ethically conscious, and creative futures.
