The applicaton of roundabouts as a measure for speed management on the urban road network

Abstract

This thesis presents the application of roundabouts as a traffic speed management measure within the urban road network of the City of Sremska Mitrovica. The fundamental principles of urban road planning and design are examined, with particular emphasis on the geometric design elements that influence vehicle operating speeds in intersection areas. The existing structure of the urban road network is presented, and locations characterized by inconsistent speed patterns resulting from intersection geometry are identified. Based on the defined evaluation criteria, priority locations for reconstruction into roundabouts were selected, and appropriate roundabout configurations were proposed. The thesis also includes a detailed analysis of an existing roundabout, comprising its horizontal alignment, vertical alignment design, as well as longitudinal and cross-sectional profiles.
