New Belgrade is a municipality that was originally formed during the SFRY. Conceived as the capital of the former Republic, it is now part of the City of Belgrade. The project has been developed for years, never fully implemented, but New Belgrade is still expanding today. For decades, this settlement has been the border area of various great powers that occupied Belgrade on one side, and other forces that occupied Vojvodina on the other side of the Sava River. With about 200,000 inhabitants, it is one of the largest municipalities of the Republic of Serbia, and also one of the main centers of economy of the country.
