Abstract

High Voltage Direct Current (HVDC) transmission has been an alternative method of transmitting electric power from one location to another. The development of power electronics creates various applications of HVDC transmission. Important characteristics of HVDC transmission and application of power electronics in systems based on this technology are discussed in this paper. Advantages, as well as disadvantages comparing to AC systems are emphasized. DC transmission grids will be reviewed at the end of this paper.
