Protection of the Zalug Settlement from Flood Waters of the Lim River

Abstract

This thesis examines the flood protection of the Zalug settlement from high waters of the Lim River, within the river reach from km 69+741 to km 72+741, with the aim of reducing flood risk and ensuring a stable and safe flow regime. The analysis includes an assessment of the natural, spatial, and hydrological characteristics of the considered river section, as well as the impacts of extreme hydrological events on the settlement, infrastructure, and agricultural areas. Design flood discharges were determined based on hydrological analyses and available data, followed by a hydraulic analysis of both the existing and the proposed river channel conditions. Particular attention is devoted to the evaluation of channel conveyance capacity, the occurrence of overbank flooding under existing conditions, and the identification of flood-prone areas. Based on the obtained results, the application of flood protection hydraulic structures, including embankments and reinforced concrete flood walls, is

analyzed in order to reduce flood risk and improve the level of protection. Hydraulic calculations were performed using a one-dimensional model in the HEC-RAS software package, and the obtained results provide the basis for defining the technical solution of the flood defense system.
